‘THE BALL’ Spirit Of Football KICK-OFF ALL STARS Match & Launch Party – 9th January 2014

All members of New Model Army will playing at the launch event starts in Battersea Park on Thursday 9th January, with a commemorative football match taking place at 2pm, exactly 150 years to the day of the very first official game of football to FA rules in the same park. The friendly game will involve Spirit of Football All-Stars members, representatives of Sheffield FC (the oldest amateur football club in the world), local community sport champions, Justin Sullivan and other members of the band New Model Army, Queen Mary University of London players and children from local schools. The game will be played according to FA rules of 150 years ago in the first half! Some players may be spotted in Victorian attire!

Queen Mary, University of London Students’ Union is launching a community sports pilot programme, supported by the University’s Centre for Public Engagement. Queen Mary London have gone into partnership with Spirit of Football CIC, and are holding two days of activities to launch ‘The Ball’ and its epic journey from Battersea Park to Brazil. Spirit of Football will accompany the Ball through Europe, North America then into South America before finishing in Rio uniting communities and social projects along the way under a common football theme.

The events on 9th January begin at Noon with 5-a-side football tournament taking place, skills activities with Queen Mary student coaches, and 1860s fancy dress costumes and make-up. Wandsworth Council & Friends of Battersea Park will, at 1:30pm, be unveiling a plaque celebrating the momentous kick-off 150 years ago! Richard Tims, the chairman of Sheffield FC, will share some wise words marking the moment, including the final stitching and first signing of The Ball, before it begins the journey to Brazil for the World Cup! The match and event will take place between the Pavilion and all weather pitches at the park.

In the evening, there will be a FREE Launch Party at the University’s Drapers Bar & Kitchen in Mile End. In the bar there will be a Rio Carnival party with cocktails, Brazilian food , a DJ and more. In the lounge there will be a Spirit of Football after party for players, spectators and students.

This will include speeches and films including a premier showing on large screen of Spirit of Football’s official 2014 song ‘The Beautiful Game’ by New Model Army. DJ Lawrence Chapple-Gill will be spinning alternative and classic tunes, and the brilliant punk covers band Colon Zamboni playing live . Friday 10th January features a seminar on the Spirit of Football journey including the aims of The Ball, the inspirational community initiatives in Brazil, Germany and beyond, the planned journey to Brazil and their previous journeys for the South African, German and Japan World Cups.
