Exhausted from our exciting and emotional project in the Nasama village in Sigatoka and the sand dune photo shoot with the Fijian national champion Nadroga rugby team, we set-off to find weekend accommodation. Being on a shoe-string budget, finding reasonable accommodation is often challenging and time consuming. This time we also were adamant that it should be seaside and relaxing on Fiji’s Coral Coast. Visiting several options that were all either fully booked or just too expensive, we tried our luck one last time at Kaila Na Ua Resort. Kaila Na Ua translates into Fijian as the “Roar of the Waves”.
Kiwi couple Rosalind and Warren were there to meet us as we jumped out of the car. Warren said, I am sure I’ve seen you somewhere before. Iris showed The Ball. Rosalind said “Hey, I saw you on Fiji TV a few days ago. Your project is awesome.” We quickly found out that their beautiful boutique resort is doing all it can to be as sustainable as possible:
- Employing locals under fair conditions
- Local bus passes for guests
- Directions for how to get to local markets to buy fruit and vegetables
- Free use of bicycles
- Encouraging lower linen turnaround
- Composting bins
- Recycling of plastic and glass bottles
