The Ball is going to Rio soon and the guys from Titia Hostel Rio de Janeiro in the Ladeira dos Trabajaras favela are readying the football matches with locals. The Spirit of Football all-star team was full of confidence after soundly defeating the barefoot prisoner team at Franco da Rocha Prison last week (yes we were playing in football shoes). However, we were brought crashing down to earth by some talented Futsal kids from Colégio São Luiz earlier this evening (thrashed) so we are anxiously recruiting talented and fair players for Rio. Anyone up for a match?

Im Scheinwerferlicht der Fußballweltmeisterschaft rücken auch die Schattenseiten in Brasilien ins Blickfeld.
Kurz vor Anpfiff der Fußball-WM blickt alle Welt nach Brasilien. Doch was wissen wir eigentlich über dieses riesige Land? Viel mehr als Fußball, Karneval, Samba und Amazonas ist es meist nicht. Abseits der geläufigen Bilder wird deutlich, dass nicht alles rund läuft zur WM. Fern der touristischen Prachtzentren beherrschen Armut und Unsicherheit den Alltag.
Durch das sportliche Megaevent treten die Missstände deutlich zutage: im Stadtkern der Großstädte explodieren die Mietpreise und viele Bewohner_innen ärmerer Viertel werden gezwungen, umzuziehen. Soziale Proteste gegen die lokale und nationale Politik rücken ebenso in den Blick wie die zwiespältige Rolle der FIFA.
Über Brasilien referiert Thomas Fatheuer. Er leitete von 2003 bis 2010 das Büro der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Rio de Janeiro. Zuvor arbeitete er in Projekten zum Waldschutz im Amazonasgebiet mit. Derzeit lebt er als freier Berater und Autor in Berlin.
Die Veranstaltung findet in Kooperation mit Spirit of Football e.V. statt. Der Verein setzt sich mit der Kampagne „Eine Welt: Eine Leidenschaft“ zur WM 2014 für ein weltoffenes und tolerantes Erfurt ein.

While Spirit Of Football & SOF2014 are taking The Ball through Brazil, Spirit of Football e.V. in Germany & the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Thüringen will be with Thomas Fatheuer – author and former director of the Office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Brazil. The discussions will be about “Brazil and the World Cup – in the shadow of the matches” – Everyone around Erfurt and further afield is invited to join the event at Café Hilgenfeld (campus UNI Erfurt). Later on, we’ll watch the opening game together at SoF’s world famous international HQ.

Spirit Of Football was invited into the home of a humble mother and son family living near the World Cup stadium in Sao Paulo. They have been moved around a lot and have endured much hardship but their spirit is alive and kicking. Thanks to Caio Vilela for the fix and the amazing images.
As the World Cup draws ever nearer, Spirit of Football checked out the spirit of street preparation in Vila Madalena in Sao Paulo. Before each World Cup for many decades people in Brazil have painted their streets in the nations colours before the World Cup gets underway. This year there has been less painting than usual but it seems things are getting into full flow just days before kick-off. Special thanks to football photogrpaher Caio Vilela for capturing the spirit and for fueling and guiding the team.
